The Republic of Singapore, often referred to as Singapore, is a parliamentary republic in Southeast Asia. It borders Malaysia to the north and Indonesia to the south, near the southern entrance of the Malacca Strait. Besides Singapore Island, the country includes 63 surrounding islets.
Singapore has a rich history, once part of the Srivijaya empire in the 8th century and the Malacca Sultanate in the 14th century. It became a British colony in the 19th century, was occupied by Japan during World War II, joined Malaysia in 1963, and gained independence in 1965.
A multicultural immigrant nation, Singapore promotes racial harmony and is known for its stable government and efficient administration. It is one of the most globalized countries and one of the "Asian Tigers," with a capitalist economy often described as "state capitalism." In 2018, Singapore ranked first in global broadband speed.
